Day 1 / 6: General Idea, Music, 3D Character drafts


Got a Trello board filled up pretty decently. This time i started the game jam with a general idea rather than going art style first, as i did in WGJ 138. The idea came from a painting draft i did earlier, and i thought it could fit the theme perfectly and as a lover of dark comedies, the general idea started to emerge. It still has some deficiencies and i guess i'll just refine it on the fly.

This time i wanted to do some proper 3d characters, and spent little time trying to decide the technical needs for the character(s). As crabs are not flexible, skinned characters were not an option but oh boy, how i love using mixamo for quick rigs so i could just use some motion capture animations and save time. So i decided to go 50-50, a skinned base and i could just slap the members (claws, legs etc.) straight on to the bones. I wanted facial expressions too, but as i'm a lazy dude, i think i'll just slap a quad into a bone and change the texture for facial expressions.

 I also tried to decide, what kind of vibes do i want from the game, so i started composing music for it and if i'm being completely honest, i love it. Try to imagine crabs telling about suicides and other dark stuff while you listen to it.

Crab Box is a black comedy depicting modern day toxic communities. 

Game starts with a narrator telling you to not be a alone. You'll meet other crabs, who were trapped in the crab box. They have their own personal hells they go thru, for example alcoholism, suicidal thoughts and other warm-hearted nuisances. Some crabs want to escape the box and the community, but other crabs try to stop them from climbing out.

You can interact with crabs by either acting for them or ignoring them. For example, a dialog could say "I think i need to be sober for a while... i've got stuff to do" and your responses are either "ignore" or "invite him for a beer". 
Someone could be alone in the corner, thinking "i've got nobody.. propably gonna blow my brains to the wall soon.." and responses are "ignore" or "offer your company for a while".

There is a ladder in the box, but you can't climb if you don't have a problem. You can gather problems by interacting with different kind of crabs. When you have a problem, you have a solution marker in the ladder, for example "quit alcohol", but if you try to climb, other crabs will come to you and you will lose progress, as some of the crabs won't speak to you or you'll lose some options from interactions. In the end, you'll either be with crabs who you can't interact with. Okay scrap this, maybe think tomorrow the general picture.
